      <image:title>News - Spring Equinox Gathering - Spring Equinox - March 2026</image:title>
<image:caption>Spring Equinox Gathering In a beautiful eco lodge on the south downs of England in East Sussex we gathered to celebrate the seasonal threshold of the Spring Equinox, a time of balance, emergence and new life. This was the second gathering for our Year of Seasonal celebrations offering. It is a privilege and joy to work with shamanic practioner, arts counselor and fellow textile artist Ali Rabjohns on these events. The day was held in circle with ceremony, with journeying led by Ali, creativity, seasonal shared food and good company. As the birds begin to make their nests for their young, we too created nests to safely hold our intentions, our seeds at this time of emergence. We had created samples as inspiration from flax tow, mud, woven willow, bramble and raffia and combined these with soft wool fleece, thread and moss. I love how each person intuitively created their own individual nests to anchor what was emerging for them. This way of making invites exploration of materials to fashion something of meaning as a container and a reminder of what we are wanting to bring forth. We were sustained with nourishing nettle soup fro the land and herb teas, plus a delicious cake made by Christine. It was a beautiful day. Our next event is Beltane on 10th May where we will be celebrating the fertility and blossoming of the land and within ourselves.</image:caption>

      <image:title>News - Spinning - March 2026 - Spinning.</image:title>
<image:caption>I love to spin and in March, I was thrilled to attended a two day event at Cambridge university organised by the Reverse Action Archaeology research team. I had happened upon this event by chance and was pulled to go. It was truly amazing to be part of the practical research of examining and comparing fibres and early spinning from Columbia and European traditions. Day 1 examined European spinning techniques. Medieval short suspended wool distaff spinning with Katrin Kania, which was rather tricky. Flax distaff spinning with Johanne Hoegh using line fibre, and Swedish flax tow spinning with Marie Ekstedt Bjersing. Some of these techniques and fibres I had worked with before, but each practitioner has different ways of doing things, and I learned so much. I was in a group with spinners from the local guilds plus the two visiting Colombian textile artists who were to lead day 2 introducing cotton and fique fibres. After we had de-seeded the fluffy Colombian cotton bolls, a process called ‘ginning’, we were taught how to prepare the fibres into cobweb-like layers. Then Kogi textile artist Carmen Nuvita Coronado, showed us how to spin using large supported spindles. I had always wanted to try a supported spindle and welcomed this opportunity. Judith Marina Torres Solis, then showed us how to prepare fique fibres which come from the agave plant. The stiff pure white fibres are joined by splicing and rolled along the thigh to add twist. Trousers were rolled up and many of us sat on the floor and got totally stuck in. We were also showed how thick rope was plied using an adapted spindle. These ropes are used as harnesses for heavier weights and for tending to the animals. The fique fibre is also woven with a looping technique similar to early European nallbinding, to make circular bags called mochilas, a traditional shoulder bag. The women told us that in their creation story that the great earth mother spun the world into being and that women continue to spin and weave to keep the world spinning. Spining and weaving in the Arhuaco and Kogi Colombian traditions are still a way of life, and it made me realise that so much of our European heritage textile skills has skipped the last few generations. Luckily I am seeing a return to more simple, considered textile practice using local materials and this is most encouraging.</image:caption>

      <image:title>News - Inspire Exhibition 2025 - Natural dyes and plant inks.</image:title>
<image:caption>In October of 2025, I was delighted to be part of ‘Inspire’, a group exhibition at the Creative Space at Brightwells, Farnham, as part of Farnham Creative Networks offering for the towns October Craft month. This opportunity offered me a great focus to create some new pieces, and, after many years, to begin to exhibit again. I am very grateful to Kate at So Kate Ceramics for inviting me to be involved. Our group comprised 11 talented creatives, from clay, to painting, to sculpture, printmaking and textiles. It was wonderful to be part of a group and to make some lovely connections. When I thought about what I would like to display, I instantly knew that I wanted to honour the plants and processes that I work with, and to invite conversations about plants, materials and colour. I created a central altar ~ a solar jar of hawthorn leaves, which, during the 4 days of our show, gently infused colour onto the wool and silk fibres that I had added. I also showcased my small intuitive talisman necklaces, woven with intention and prayer, and with the energy of the plant infused and held in the colour. I took my spinning wheel too, some spun and naturally dyed fibres and nature dyed threads and scarves. On the Sunday, I hosted an introduction to making and using inks from plants. Visitors gathered around the large table at the centre of the space and explored some of these beautiful natural ink colours and were invited to experiment with simple kitchen chemistry to create additional colours and patterns. I am very grateful for the conversations and reflection on my offerings and this now has fueled me to continue on this path, gently as we turn to a new year.</image:caption>

<image:title>News - Rainbow Weave School Project - Natural dyes - Rainbow Weave school project</image:title>
<image:caption>In late June 2025 I visited a local primary school as artist lead for a creative project funded by Farnham Councils South Street Fund. The children aged 6 to 7, came in small groups to learn about dyes from natural materials and to have a hands on experience of being part of the process of dyeing fibres which were then to be used in a collaborative weave. They were introduced to the fibre, fleece from Southdown sheep and yarn from blue faced Leicester. The majority of children had seen sheep, a few lived on farms, and one had even seen them being sheared. We chatted about how wool becomes fabric, and they were all keen helpers, helping me to spin some yarn on my drop spindle. Three historical natural dyes were used; Madder (pinks, reds), Weld (yellows) and Indigo (blues). These were over-dyed for secondary colours. Four Solar jars were made by the children so they could observe the colour take up over a week. They used tea, onion skins, dyer’s chamomile and dyer’s coreopsis. Once I had washed and dried the fibres, they were split into warm and cool colours ready for the weaving session. The children explored their creativity, responding to the colours and yarn textures as they worked in pairs or three’s to weave on circular frames. The resulting weaves were strung to create a mobile as a gift for the school as these children were soon to leave for Junior school. It was a real privilege to share these heritage skills with the children and staff and to work together to create the Rainbow Weave.</image:caption>
